Park Information

Rating: ★★★★☆(4/5) - Worth a Trip

This lesser known gem in Southeastern Minnesota consists of two separate units: Mystery Cave, home to a limestone cave 60 feet below the surface with unique geologic features, and Forestville, a historic town with several preserved buildings and costumed characters performing from Memorial Day to Labor Day. At only 2 hours from the Twin Cities, this park is an excellent weekend adventure and fun for the whole family. Camping is available in the Forestville Unit only.

Hiking in Mystery Cave is limited to guided tours only with several options to meet your comfort and skill levels. Forestville has several trails with most located near the historic town. The hilly topography in this region means that most trails require around 200 feet of elevation gain, though there are some flatter options like the Big Spring Trail. It is important to note that most trails are shared with horses and that this state park receives the most horse traffic of any Minnesota State Park -- watch your step!
