Named for the infamous portage through mucky marshes covered in savanna-like grass that connects the Great Lakes Watershed to the Mississippi River Watershed, Savanna Portage State Park offers excellent history and scenery. This park is almost entirely surrounded by the Savanna Portage State Forest, which makes the park feel even more remote and wilderness-like than most other Minnesota State Parks. Camp at the developed campground on Lake Shumway or hike into one of several backcountry campsites throughout the park.
Hikes here range from the easy loop around Lake Shumway to the 12 mile roundtrip Historical Savanna Portage Trail. Follow the trail to Wolf Lake for a more secluded hike to a quiet lake -- only electric motors are allowed on boats in the park. The Continental Divide Trail is also part of the Hiking Club, one of the longest Hiking Club trails, and provides excellent views from an overlook platform at the top of the Continental Divide which separates the Great Lakes watershed from the Mississippi River watershed.
