Superior National Forest, Minnesota

Park Information

Rating: ★★★★★(5/5) - Must Visit

The most well-known National Forest in Minnesota, the Superior National Forest covers over 6,000 square miles. Not only does it include the scenic areas and Sawtooth Mountains along the shore of Lake Superior, but also the entire Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the Laurentian Divide area in the Iron Range. Recreational opportunities are abundant and there is probably somewhere in the forest for any outdoor activity you can think of. Camping facilities range from developed campgrounds to primitive backcountry sites and are scattered throughout the forest.

There are over 2,000 miles of trails in the Superior National Forest, including the famous 310 mile Superior Hiking Trail. Unlike trails in state parks, most places see less use and are less developed. Information about trails can be hard to find, and the best source is talking to a ranger. Be prepared with adequate food, water, clothing, and first aid! Trail highlights include the Oberg and LaVeaux Mountain Trails, Eagle Mountain, Manitou Overlook Trail, and Lookout Mountain.
